Quick answer
What does Temp Postal actually do beyond generating an address?
- Push delivery rather than polling, so mail appears without a refresh
- SPF, DKIM and DMARC results are shown per message so you can see what a sender actually passed
- Attachments are downloadable and scanned message structure is preserved
- Custom domains and an API turn the service into test infrastructure rather than a toy
Receiving infrastructure
Mail is accepted at the edge, parsed into structured message data, and pushed to your open session over a live channel. The inbox you see is the state of the mailbox, not a cached snapshot, which is why a message that arrives while you are reading appears at the top without any action from you.
Multiple receiving domains are available, and this matters more than it sounds. When a signup form rejects one domain, switching to another frequently resolves it, because blocklists are maintained per domain rather than per service.
Every message carries its authentication results. Seeing that a sender failed DKIM, or that a lookalike domain failed DMARC, is often the fastest way to identify a phishing attempt in a test corpus, and it is information most consumer webmail hides.
Reading and working with messages
Verification codes are detected in the body and surfaced with a one-tap copy, which removes the most repetitive part of any signup test. Links are preserved and rendered so you can complete confirmation flows without leaving the page.
Attachments are handled rather than stripped. You can download what a sender attached, which matters for testing invoice delivery, ticket confirmations and export flows where the payload is the thing under test.
The reading view keeps the original message structure, including HTML rendering with remote content handled conservatively. That means the layout you see is close to what a recipient would see in a normal client, which is the point when you are checking a template.
Automation and integration
The REST API creates inboxes, lists messages and fetches full bodies, which is enough to drive an end-to-end registration test from a CI job. Webhooks push new-message events to your endpoint so a test can wait on a callback rather than sleeping and hoping.
Custom domains let a team receive on a domain it owns. Beyond avoiding blocklists, this makes addresses predictable and readable in test output, which is a meaningful difference when a failing pipeline needs to be debugged by someone who did not write it.
Rate limits are published per tier so an automated workload can be sized before it is deployed rather than discovered in production. Throttling in a test suite looks exactly like flakiness, and flakiness is expensive.
Privacy and operational limits
Retention windows are enforced by deletion on every plan. Longer retention buys time, not permanence, and there is no hidden archive behind the interface.
Inboxes are receive-only across every tier. This is a deliberate constraint: an anonymous outbound relay would attract abuse and degrade the receiving reputation the whole platform depends on.
Nothing in the product tries to guess who you are. The free tier requires no account at all, and paid accounts exist to attach billing and limits, not to build a profile from message contents.
Frequently asked questions
Does the inbox update without refreshing the page?
Yes. Delivery is pushed to the open session over a live channel, so a message appears in the list within seconds of arriving, with a polling fallback if the live connection drops.
Can I download attachments from a temporary inbox?
Yes. Attachments are preserved and downloadable for as long as the message exists, which makes the service usable for testing invoice, ticket and export emails.
Do you show SPF, DKIM and DMARC results?
Yes. Every message displays its authentication results, which is how you tell a genuine sender from a lookalike domain during testing or when checking a suspicious message.
Can I use my own domain?
Custom domains are part of the Business tier. You point the domain's MX records at our receiving infrastructure and addresses on it behave like any other inbox, without appearing on public disposable-domain blocklists.
Is there an API for automated testing?
Yes. The REST API covers inbox creation, message listing and full message retrieval, and webhooks deliver new-message events so a test can wait on an event rather than polling on a timer.
